Sublingual Immunotherapy is an increasingly popular method of treating allergies for patients that would otherwise need routine allergy shots. Sublingual Immunotherapy replaces the shots with an allergy drop that is simply placed under the tongue, rather than injected into the bloodstream. Allergy drops offer the same long-lasting effects of allergy shots, but without the discomfort associated with the shots. Since allergy drops are customizable, at Ear, Nose and Throat Associates of Texas, P.A., we perform a thorough assessment of each of our Frisco, McKinney and Plano allergy drops patients to determine the best possible treatment.
If you experience mild to severe allergies even when doing your best to avoid allergens and take medications such as antihistamines, SLIT might be the treatment you need. In general, immunotherapy offers benefits that can’t be achieved with medications alone, as immunotherapy is the only way to treat the cause of the allergies rather than just the symptoms.
Allergy drops are especially helpful for infants and children, both because the allergy drops offer relief from ailments that are common among children and because the allergy drop is more easily administered compared to allergy shots. Severe asthmatics are also potentially good candidates for allergy drops, as well as people with chronic sinusitis, food and mold allergies.
Most clinical trials published over the last 20 years suggest that sublingual immunotherapy is safe and effective in the treatment of rhinitis and asthma caused by allergies. As soon as we customize the treatment for each of our McKinney, Plano and Frisco allergy drop patients, the drops are administered in routine intervals with a gradually increasing dosage. Allergy symptoms should decrease within three months, but those with more severe allergies will require a longer treatment. Eventually, the allergy drops are able to control the cause of the allergy symptoms, improving the patients overall quality of life.
After we create the customized allergy treatment, we administer the first dose in our office so we can monitor each patient for any adverse reactions. Then, our Plano, Frisco and McKinney allergy shots patients go home with a vial of allergy drops and clear instructions for how to take or administer the treatment. In most cases, allergy drops patients will apply one or two drops under the tongue, once a day.
No matter how mild or severe your allergy symptoms are, we at Ear, Nose and Throat Associates of Texas, P.A. are confident we can find a treatment option that suits you. If you think allergy drops are a good fit, simply schedule a consultation and we’ll have you in to see us as soon as possible.
