Commonly referred to as nasal septum repair, septoplasty surgery is performed to restore healthy function to the nasal septum. The nasal septum is the wall of bone and cartilage that separates the nasal passageways and there are many possible negative side effects if it is not properly aligned. A misalignment of the septum can be caused by a physical trauma or it can be malformed from birth. In either case, many of our McKinney, Plano and Frisco septoplasty patients seek the treatment to help improve their overall health and quality of life.
You may be a candidate for septoplasty surgery if you have difficulty breathing through your nose that is not improved with medication. Septal deviation can contribute to congestion and recurrent sinus issues as well. Septal deviation is often a factor in overall sleep issues. Asymmetric nasal airflow can often contribute to recurrent nosebleeds as well.
Our goal for every septoplasty surgery we perform at Ear, Nose and Throat Associates of Texas, P.A. is to drastically improve overall wellbeing and quality of life by correcting any issues present with the septum. After septoplasty surgery, our Frisco, McKinney and Plano septoplasty patients report improved breathing and sleep quality. Sinus infections are much less frequent and less severe, and many patients experience a dramatic decrease in the number of nosebleeds they have.
Septoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The incisions required to perform the operation are made inside the nostrils, leaving no external scarring. The procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes to perform. Your surgeon will reshape the bone and cartilage that make up the septum, removing portions of the cartilage and bone as needed.
The amount of pain associated with septoplasty surgery is generally mild, and is well controlled using oral pain medications. Septoplasty surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Some patients may need splints or packing inside the nose during the healing process. There is no cosmetic change after a septoplasty procedure.
